  • Hearing God’s Voice in an Ever-Changing World

    by Paul Bernitt, DHH

Hearing God’s Voice in an Ever-Changing World

I can recall times of life as a pastor, father, husband, and health practitioner when I needed to hear God’s voice.  There are times when I have been withdrawn and unattentive to God’s voice for a variety of reasons.  As I have matured, I have recognized the difference between hearing His voice and being coulded with something else.  I have learned to take time daily to hear His voice and to follow through with His will in my life even when it feels uncomfortable. I have come to realize that I am not my own, I have been bought with a price and I must stay attentive to His will for my life for not only my personal benefit but also for the benefit of all I come in contact with.

In today’s fast-paced world, we are surrounded by endless noise. Social media, television, news, and even our daily interactions constantly tell us what to think, how to live, and where to find happiness. But in the middle of all this noise, there is one voice we cannot afford to miss—God’s voice. In John 10:27-28, Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

This passage powerfully reminds us of God’s deep love for us and promises that we are His forever. More importantly, it offers guidance on how we can live in a world where Christian values are increasingly challenged and questioned. As believers, it’s vital that we hear God’s voice above the noise and distractions of the world. Let’s explore why hearing His voice is so important and practical steps we can take to stay connected to God in an ever-changing world.

The World’s Noise vs. God’s Voice

Imagine standing in a crowded room where everyone is talking at once. It’s hard to hear one specific person, right? This is what it’s like to live in a world where so many voices are competing for our attention. The world tells us that success, money, and fame are the only things that matter. It pushes worldly values that often contradict the teachings of Christ. The Worldly carnal views push us to focus on material things, pursue selfish ambitions, and live for ourselves.

But God’s voice calls us to a different way of living. He calls us to a life of love, peace, and purpose that is centered on Him. Hearing God’s voice means tuning out the world’s carnal messages and focusing on His truth. It means prioritizing His Word and listening for His guidance in every area of our lives so we will know what to do when we need to do it for our personal benefit and the benefit of those around us. While the world’s values may change, God’s voice remains constant, offering us direction, wisdom, and peace.

God Knows Us and Our Struggles

One of the most comforting parts of John 10:27-28 is when Jesus says, “I know them.” This means that God knows us personally—our fears, challenges, and hopes. In a world where it often feels like we are just another face in the crowd, it’s incredible to realize that the Creator of the universe knows each one of us intimately. He not only knows us, but He lives in us to help and guide us along life’s journey.  Because He lives in us He knows and feels what we are going through, the struggles we face, and the pressure we feel to conform to the voices of the world’s values.

In modern society, it can be especially difficult to stand firm in our Christian beliefs. Our faith is constantly being tested and questioned. But we don’t face these challenges alone. God understands what we are up against and promises to walk with us and in us through every trial and lead us to a deeper understanding of Him and His Divine purpose in it all. In fact, the very challenges we face and overcome strengthen our relationship with Him, as we learn to trust His voice for guidance and comfort.

Following God’s Lead in a Challenging World

Hearing God’s voice is the first step, but it’s not enough by itself. Jesus also says in John 10:27, “They follow me.” Following God means trusting Him, even when it’s difficult or unpopular. It means making choices that align with His Word, even when the world around us is heading in a different direction.

In today’s culture, where Christian values are often misunderstood or rejected, it can be tempting to go along with the crowd. But following God means we must stand firm in our faith and share the light we have been freely given with others. This might look different for each of us. It could mean being kind to someone who has hurt us, standing up for the Truth of God’s Word, or simply living with integrity when no one else is watching.

By following God, we are choosing to live a life that honors Him above all else. This may come with challenges, but it also brings things money cannot buy, such as hope, peace, and greater purpose. We know that when we follow Jesus, we are walking the path He has set out for us—a path that leads to eternal life.

    The Gift of Eternal Life

Jesus says in John 10:28, “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.” This is one of the greatest promises we have as Christians. Eternal life is not something we can earn; it’s a gift from God through Jesus Christ. By accepting Jesus as our Savior and following Him, we are given the promise of a life with God that never ends.

This promise gives us hope, especially in difficult times. In a constantly changing world where nothing seems certain, we can hold on to the unchanging promise of eternal life. I can assure you that after you go to Heaven and are there for about 100 billion years, you won’t fret over the temporary difficulties you experienced here. This life on earth is temporary, but our life with God is forever. No matter what we face here, we know that our future is secure in Christ.

    Protected as God’s Children

The final part of John 10:28 is a powerful assurance: “No one will snatch them out of my hand.” Once we belong to God, we are His and He is ours forever. We are safe in His hands, and nothing can separate us from His love and His generous favor. This promise is especially important in a world that often feels uncertain and unstable. As God’s children, we are under His protection. Just like a good father looks after his children, God watches over us as His children to guide us and keep us safe.

Even though we may face challenges and difficulties in life, we can trust that God is always with us. We don’t need to fear the future because the future is secure in His love. He has promised to protect us and to lead us through every storm.

Practical Steps to Hear God’s Voice

So how do we hear God’s voice in such a noisy world? Here are some practical steps to help us stay connected to Him:

    1. Spend Time in Prayer: Set aside daily time to pray and listen for God’s guidance. Prayer is a conversation, and it’s important to listen as much as we talk.
    2. Read the Bible Regularly: God speaks to us through His Word. Make Bible reading a daily habit and ask God to reveal His truth to you through Scripture.
    3. Practice Stillness and Silence: In the busyness of life, find moments of quiet to be still before God. This is where we often hear Him the clearest.
    4. Seek Godly Counsel: Surround yourself with other believers who can encourage and support you in your faith. Sometimes, God speaks through the wisdom of others.
    5. Keep a Prayer Journal: Writing down your prayers and any insights from God can help you see how He is working in your life.
    6. Worship and Praise: Worship connects us to God’s heart and helps us focus on Him, making it easier to hear His voice.
    7. Pay Attention to God’s Creation: Being in nature can help us hear God more clearly. Take time to enjoy His creation and listen for His voice.
    8. Obey Promptings from the Holy Spirit: When you feel a nudge to do something good, follow it. Obeying these promptings helps you recognize God’s voice more easily.
    9. Be Patient and Persistent: Hearing God’s voice takes time. Be patient and keep seeking Him, even when you don’t hear Him right away.
    10. Listen:  God is always speaking.  Take time to intentionally listen.

    Conclusion

In a world where Christian values are being constantly challenged, it is more important than ever to hear God’s voice and follow Him. His voice brings peace, guidance, and protection, and His promises offer hope in uncertain times to you and those you come in contact with. As we seek to hear Him, let’s remember that God knows us, loves us, is leading us, and is in us. No matter what we face, we can rest in the assurance that we are His, and nothing can snatch us out of His hand. Let’s make hearing and following God’s voice the foundation of our lives, trusting in His promise of eternal life and the security of being His beloved children.

  • Strength in Adversity – Walking the Christian Path

    Written by Paul Bernitt, DHH

man walking alone on a long arduous path

It’s natural to desire peace and smooth paths in our daily lives, especially when we embark on our Christian journey. Truth be told, everyone experiences difficulty, but how we choose to respond to difficulty can make all the difference. We want a walk that feels easy, free of obstacles, and rich in blessings. But the truth is, God doesn’t call us to a life without challenge. He calls us to learn, grow, and adapt, and in my experience as a Pastor, these attributes rarely happen in comfort.

The Bible is filled with examples of how God uses adversity to refine His people. The Christian life is not about avoiding hardship but embracing it with faith, knowing that it serves a divine purpose to purge impurities deep within us all. In this issue of the Healthier You Newsletter, we reflect on how adversity produces spiritual maturity and strengthens our faith, drawing upon the wisdom of two key scriptures: Romans 5:3-5 and Proverbs 17:3.

    Embracing Challenges: Romans 5:3-5

Romans 5:3-5 speaks directly to this truth:

“We also glory in our sufferings because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

These verses highlight a powerful message: suffering is not something to fear but rather something to embrace with joy, knowing that you can and will improve the quality of your life. This seems counterintuitive at first. Why would we take joy in our trials? Yet, God’s purpose is clear — suffering leads to perseverance, which in turn builds character. And that character produces hope. Think of it this way: I can be happy based on the happenings of my life, but joy is not contingent on what is happening outside of me. Joy is purely based on the inner strength we can reveal, such as perseverance, character, and hope for a better outcome.

In the Christian walk, trials are not obstacles but opportunities to become more like Christ. The hardships we face are meant to drive our awareness of who we truly are in Christ, helping us to develop endurance, strength, and hope that rests on God’s unfailing love. Through these moments of adversity, we are reminded that our faith is not in our circumstances but in a God who works all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).

    The Refining Process: Proverbs 17:3

Proverbs 17:3 gives us another profound insight for this refining process:

“The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart.”

Just as precious metals like silver and gold are refined by fire, so are our hearts tested and purified by God through our fiery trials. The crucible is a place of intense heat and pressure, but it’s necessary to remove impurities and bring out the true value of the metal.

Similarly, our hearts are refined in the furnace of life’s trials. While the refining process can be uncomfortable or even painful, it ultimately drives the impurities within us to the surface so they can be removed. This purifies and sanctifies our souls and makes us more like Christ. Imagine your potential as the dross—the impurities in your character—is removed as we go through the fire, allowing God’s nature to shine through us.

As a Pastor, I have seen the power of pain lead to tremendous breakthroughs.  One time, a man was deeply hurt by someone he trusted.  He carried that pain for a long time.  I asked him, “Are you going to let sin have dominion over you?”  He replied, “I didn’t commit a sin.”  I then explained, “I am not saying you sinned; I am asking you if you are going to allow the sin against you to rob you of your joy, peace, and faith to overcome.”  In the twinkling of an eye, this man saw how sin was robbing him of the life he deserved.  His countenance changed, and he was set free that very moment.

    Why God Allows Challenges

It’s common to wonder why a loving God would allow His children to face difficulties. If God loves us, shouldn’t He shield us from pain and suffering? But just as a loving parent allows their child to learn and grow through challenges, God allows us to face difficulties and challenges us to mature. The bottom line is that challenges challenge us to make us better, not bitter.

Consider this: a life without challenges would be a life without growth. God knows what we need to develop the fruits of the Spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Often, these qualities are best cultivated in the fertile ground of adversity. Through experiencing frustration, we learn patience, through conflict, we learn peace, and through trials, we develop faithfulness.

God uses the difficulties we face to reveal where our faith is weak and where we need to trust Him more. God promises us that He will never place on us more than we can bear and says that all things work together for our good. He promises He will never leave us or forsake us and is an ever-present help in time of need. As we lean on Him, our faith grows stronger, and we develop the endurance needed to finish the race He has set before us.

    The Example of Christ

There is no greater example of perseverance in the face of adversity than Jesus Christ. His life was not one of ease or comfort but one marked by suffering, rejection, and, ultimately, the cross. Yet, in every trial, Jesus trusted His Father’s plan and remained steadfast in His mission.  Jesus did not go through difficulty just for the sake of difficulty.  He experienced it so He could overcome it and share His victory with us.  You see, through Christ’s victory, we become partakers of His Divine nature to overcome.

Hebrews 12:2 tells us, “For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Jesus endured the greatest suffering because He knew the eternal glory that awaited Him. He saw beyond the pain to the purpose and trusted in God’s perfect plan to overcome difficulty and share His victory with us..

As followers of Christ, we are called to follow in His footsteps and carry our own cross. When we face trials, we can see them as defeat and be victimized, or we can turn our pain into meaningful purpose.  We must never forget our great forerunner, Jesus, as our example and find strength in knowing that He has walked the path before us and is ordering our steps. We are not alone in our suffering, and we are not without hope. Just as Christ was raised in victory, we, too, can overcome through Him.

    The Fruit of Adversity

As difficult as it may be to accept, adversity is one of the primary ways God works in our lives to produce lasting fruit. It’s through adversity that we are tested and refined. It’s through adversity that our faith is strengthened. And it’s through adversity that we are transformed into the image of Christ.

    James 1:2-4 echoes this truth:

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that testing your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

God’s ultimate goal for us is not comfort but maturity. He wants us to be “complete, not lacking anything. ” He uses trials to reveal weaknesses so they can be overcome and we can reach our rightful place where we lack nothing. When we understand this, we can approach our challenges with a new perspective. Rather than seeing them as setbacks or punishments, we can see them as opportunities for growth and transformation.

    Hope That Does Not Disappoint

In the end, the trials we face in this life are temporary. I assure you that 150 billion years from now, when you are in Heaven, you will not be thinking about all the difficulties you experienced in this life.  Our hope is not in this world but in the eternal life, we have in Christ. Romans 5:5 reminds us that this hope “does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

No matter what we face, we can hold onto the hope that God’s love is in us. This hope is not wishful thinking; it is a confident expectation rooted in God’s faithfulness. As His Temple, He is in us in every trial, and He will see us through to the other side as He orders our steps.

As Christians, we are called to walk the path of faith, not the path of least resistance. Much like a lack of gravity would make us weak, so too will a lack of resistance in life.  We are called to embrace the challenges, knowing that they are part of God’s refining process to make us better and more effective in life. Ultimately, it’s not about avoiding adversity but about allowing God to use it to shape us into the people He has called us to be.

    Conclusion: Walking in Strength

In your walk with God, remember that He is more concerned with your character than your comfort. He is not interested in making life easy but in making you strong. Much like the law of gravity keeps us strong, the challenges you face today are part of His plan to mold you into the person He created you to be. Just under all of the mess is a power yet to be revealed in you.

As you reflect on Romans 5:3-5 and Proverbs 17:3, take comfort in knowing that God is with and in you in every trial. He is refining you, strengthening you, and preparing you for the greater things He has in store. And as you walk through the fire, remember that your hope is not in the absence of trials but in the presence of a loving God who will never leave you or forsake you.

Let adversity be the crucible that strengthens your faith, shapes your character, and fills you with hope that does not disappoint. In this journey, God walks with you every step of the way.

    Episode 40: God's Plan for Self-Care

We have wellness for a purpose, and part of God’s purpose for us is to radiate love and light. Join Michael as he discusses the spiritual understanding behind self-care.

God has a plan and wellness is a part of that plan. C.S. Lewis, a renowned writer, states in his only audio recording available that the plan of God was to save us from ourselves, and the self that we were intended to be is not of nature, but of God. We have wellness for a purpose, and part of God’s purpose for us is to radiate love and light.

On this episode of Healthy You, Michael talks about the understanding of self and self-care, and how they tie in with God’s plan.
