A study released last month by Medco Health Solutions, a prescription drug management company, reported that the use of prescription sleep aids doubled between 2000 and 2004, and spending for sleep aids grew 190 percent over the same period! Are you one of the millions of people reaching for pharmaceuticals to help you sleep at night? Try these suggestions for a couple of weeks, and feel the difference in your length and quality of sleep – and the increase in your energy upon waking.

Go to bed and get up at the same time each day. This “resets” your internal clock and trains your brain for rest. Studies show that you should go to sleep before midnight each night for maximum rest. Six hours of sleep beginning before midnight is better than eight hours begun after midnight.
Exercise during the day. Get at least 30 minutes of good exercise in before evening; preferably before afternoon. This will exhaust you in a good way, putting you to sleep faster.
Don’t eat before bed. Your body stays up to process what’s in your stomach.
Quit stimulants. The advice to stop drinking caffeine and smoking for thirty minutes before bed is good, but better is to cut these addictions out completely. After a couple of weeks, your sleep will improve in ways you never dreamed!

For people with bona fide sleep disorders, pharmaceutical sleep aids may be a necessity. But for the rest of us, good exercise and a regular schedule are all you need for a good night’s sleep. |
